2020 is the year for celebrities bringing back the 90s trend as we have seen it swarm the red carpets already this year and we are only in February. This recurring trend has appeared many times before but it seems this year we should all start embracing it again.
It started this year with the Golden Globes where we saw cut out detail over the stomach and racer back tops from many of the power females hitting the red carpets. Taylor Swift was seen in an Etro floral gown and Sienna Miller in a Gucci gold dress both with a cut out showing their midriffs. A bare-midriff was encouraged by the hip-hop and rap videos that became mainstream in the early 90s. Zendaya is another example as she stepped out in a mid-rise skirt and a crop by Tom Ford after nearly hitting the top spot for ‘Best Dressed’ in the Critics Choice Awards.
The sag awards just a few weeks later saw celebrities arriving in Los Angeles Shrine Auditorium wearing outfits that could have been worn back in the 90s. Jennifer Aniston kept her look very simple wearing a silk vintage gown by Dior referring to the minimalism the era brought. Kaitlyn Dever was also inspired by the 90s with a bright pink halter neck dress by Ralph Lauren paired with silver platforms and a square toe which both resemble that era nicely.
It’s not just all about the outfits as Dua Lipa had a stand out 90s hairstyle at the Grammys created by stylist Chris Appleton who regularly works with Kim Kardashian, Jennifer Lopez and Ariana Grande. Her hair was in a sleek topknot with two tendrils of hair at the front. Appleton posted on his Instagram pictures of Dua Lipa and captioned it “Grammys 1999” which was clearly his inspiration. Jennifer Lopez was also seen rocking the 90s tendrils hairstyle at the SAG awards. I think it’s time we rock this hairstyle too.
It may be 2020 but it may start looking like the 90s again. Find your old racer back tops, square platform shoes, wear a tendrils hair style and you’re good to go.
