Is the collaboration worth thinking about for your summer wardrobe?
A couple of days ago, the streetwear community were shocked with the sudden release of the Billie Eilish by Takashi Murakami collection, which is also a collaboration with Japanese retailer UNIQLO. The collaboration between all three parties was announced on the 15th May on UNIQLO’s official Instagram account, and instantly sent fans of Billie Eilish and Murakami alike in to a frenzy. On the other hand, no official release date was ever announced, until the 24th May when the collection was unexpectedly instantly available. The products are still currently available to buy, but are set to sell out within the next couple of days, and it was also announced that some US stores which have remained open throughout this pandemic are releasing the items on the 29th May. Available for women, men and children, there are many styles to choose from, from a pop of colour to massive graphic prints!
At the age of just 18 years old, Billie Eilish has become one of the biggest music artists around the world over the past couple of years. This collaboration with one of the biggest contemporary artists and one of the biggest fashion retailers at this current moment in time shows that Billie Eilish is only going onwards and upwards. Her debut studio album which released in 2019, ‘When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go?’, debuted at #1 in over 15 countries around the world, clearly showing how viral she has become. In early January 2020, H&M collaborated with the famous singer for a more “edgy” collection, with many sizes selling out instantly.
Takashi Murakami has been in the spotlight within the fashion industry over the past ten years, due to his unique art style which has attracted him a lot of attention from major brands and fashion designers, such as Supreme and Virgil Abloh. The Japanese artist has also worked with Billie Eilish before, as in 2019 Murakami directed and animated the official music video for her hit song ‘you should see me in a crown’. The idea to collaborate with UNQILO is just another reason why Murakami is one of the most influential people right now in the fashion industry. A graduate from Tokyo University of the Arts and now one of the biggest pop-artists of all time, Murakami is also known for his iconic flower art across the world.
UNIQLO are known for being at the forefront of collaborations within the fashion industry, with the brand having released graphic collections with major names such as Pokemon, Hello Kitty, Kaws, Marvel and Disney. Their newest collaboration with Billie Eilish and Takashi Murakami is one of their biggest yet, with surely many more massive collaborations still to come.

The multi-coloured flower contrasts against the black t-shirt, with the small pop of colour making it a must-have for your summer collection.

Another one of our favourite picks of the collection has got to be the blue t-shirt for men, which includes the image of Billie Eilish’s eyes with a red filter. Also included in this design are cartoon eyes that have been drawn by Murakami himself, mixing contemporary art with real imagery. This is an item which #TheStreetScene thinks is going to sell out ASAP!
