Another American Themed Met This Year!

The first Monday of May for the Met Gala is back for good after being disrupted for 2 years after the pandemic, and we have never ever been happier.

Last year’s Met went off with a boom after being suspended in 2020 due to the pandemic, it doesn;t feel that long ago because honestly? It wasn’t. September brought out many looks, some iconic and some scandalous from Kim Kardashian’s huge all black ensemble to Billie Eilish changing her look to full out princess. We also can’t forget Queen Ri Ri winning the show with 267K Bulgari diamonds. We can’t wait for this year’s looks, what designers have in store, and which celebrities are going to be stepping out onto the carpet.

But first and foremost, what is the Met Gala?

The Met Gala is an annual fundraising gala held for the benefit of the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute in New York City. It is a chance for designers to work closely with celebrities on outfits, and they are generally encouraged to dress innovatively rather than playing safe. The outfit pieces aren’t supposed to be trendy and desired but rather spectated and appreciated. The ball is a very discrete event with there being a social media ban for the celebrities inside the building. However, we can’t forget the iconic bathroom selfies of all the celebrities from past Mets. It’s also $35,000 to get in and around $275,000 if you want a table, not just ANYONE can show up.

This year’s Met Gala takes place on Monday 2 May in New York City. The theme is a continuation from last year and is In America: An Anthology of Fashion, another American themed Met Gala arrives in 2022! The question “Who gets to be American?” was presented at Prabal Gurung’s spring/summer 2020 show, and it will be addressed at the Met Gala 2022, as well. According to Vogue, this part of the exhibition is meant to be a historical retrospective exploring the development of American fashion and will aim to present a thoughtful homage to American history, including the Gilded Age. The official theme of the ball is set on Gilded Glamour, the era between 1870 and 1900. In America, this part of history is known as the Gilded Age due to its period of immense economic growth.

As for the hosting of the Met this year, on 17 March, Vogue announced that its 2022 hosts would include Regina King, Blake Lively, Ryan Reynolds, and Lin-Manuel Miranda as the night’s official co-chairs. We can’t wait to see these amazing actors and actresses hosting at the Met this year.

We’re hoping to see many fan-favourite and first-timer celebrities at the Met this year. Fans are hoping to see the return of Ariana Grande, Beyonce and the Euphoria cast at the upcoming ball. Fans are also hoping to see more K-pop idols at the next Met as the presence of Rosé from Blackpink and CL made history last year on the carpet, becoming the first female K-pop stars to attend the Met Gala.

Another thing to love about the Met Gala is the celebrity Gets Ready For The Met Gala videos uploaded on Vogue’s YouTube channel.
