Back To The Basics

The micro trend that isn’t so ‘micro’.

Subversive basics are taking over the fashion world by a storm and are really giving a new approach to the ‘norm’ of fashion. From sexy cut outs to unconventional straps and sheer clothing, subversive basics aren’t so basic. We’re seeing them everywhere, from the runway, our favourite celebs and daring humans down the street. Just what are subversive basics?

Described by trend forecaster Agustina Panzoni on TikTok, as “basics that rebel up to the point of losing their utility.” This micro or should I say macro trend gained lots of popularity and positive responses from viewers on the social media app. The video which has over 500k views at the moment does a good job in telling us how the subversive trend is one step in the future for our clothes. Turning ordinary pieces in our wardrobe into interesting cut outs.

Designers and labels such as Mugler, Isaboulder and rising designer Karoline Vitto have been seen executing subversive basics with asymmetrical strapping and blank spaces. Designer Rui Zhou’s clothing brand Rui Official is skyrocketing in popularity at the moment after pop stars Olivia Rodrigo and Ariana Grande were on Instagram wearing the brand. Miss Rodrigo was head to toe in Rui Official for her Vogue Singapore October ‘Dreamers’ Issue Cover. Likewise, Miss Grande was seen wearing the brand for promotion of her new ‘God is a woman’ perfume.

This trend is on fire right now and is only getting more popular, we can’t wait to see how much subversive basics clothing spreads and hits the mainstream stores. It’s a fun new style to fashion with key holes, sheers, layering and straps. It’s not as basic as it lets on.
