Christmas time is usually when consumption is at it highest, with many new items often being bought such as clothes, shoes and toys. However, in recent years, buying second-hand Christmas presents has become very popular for a variety of different reasons.

Why is giving second-hand presents popular?

Buying second-hand is particularly favoured by younger generations such as Gen Z and Millennials, as it’s a much more affordable option with prices constantly rising due to inflation and the current cost of living crisis in the UK.

However, that’s not the only reason many are turning to thrifted gifts in recent years. Most young people are aware of the current impacts of climate change, and many big name Highstreet clothing stores do not make their materials sustainably. It often takes up to a 1000 gallons of water to make a piece of clothing, making it not able to biodegrade properly and causing a negative effect on the environment.

Therefore, this is persuading many people to thrift their clothing, being conscious about which companies they are supporting that are polluting the environment. Another thing to mention is that fast fashion is often not good quality and not long lasting.

Another reason many like shopping for gifts this way is that items are often pre-loved and one of a kind. This makes them more special and personal presents, rather than buying a mass produced gift from a big company.
