Scary facts about sun beds!

There is nothing better when going on holiday knowing you already have a tan and that you won’t look like a pasty British tourist. As some of us DIY tan using popular brands such as Bondi Sands or St Moritz others decide to head to the local salon and have a session in the sun beds.

For years this has been popular and still continues to be used on the daily. However there are so many risks that need to be shared as people need to understand the extreme consequences that can unfold after using sunbeds.

According to Cancer Research UK, melanoma skin cancer incidence rates have more than doubled in the UK since the early-1990s. There are about 16,000 new melanoma skin cancer cases in the UK every year.

It exposes your skin to large amounts of UV rays that age your skin and increase your risk of skin cancer. Sunbeds give off UV rays that can be to fifteen times stronger than the midday Mediterranean sun. What sunbeds can do is cause your skin to sag and wrinkle.

If you are still thinking of using a sunbed, please think again. Sunbed uses increases your risk of skin cancer, whatever your age, sex and skin type. But some people are at greater risk that others and should not use a sunbed under any circumstances.

This includes you if:

  • You have fair or freckled skin;
  • Your skin always burns and never tans or burns before it tans;
  • You have a lot of moles;
  • You have had skin cancer, or a family member has had skin cancer;
  • You use cosmetics or take medications that make your skin more sensitive to UV rays.

Please at all costs try and avoid sunbeds because your life is more important. There are always alternatives.
