Ava’s Beauty Bible: How to give yourself a Spa worthy facial from home

If not being able to get out the house to the Salon or Spa is starting to show on your skin, then it’s time to take matters into your own hands. What better way to give yourself the little boost that we’ve all been needing? Allowing time to pamper yourself will make you feel good and look good, and trust me, your skin will be thanking you tomorrow. Follow these steps to give yourself a refreshing facial in the comfort of your own home.

Step 1- Prep

You may be itching to get started but before you go anywhere near your face, make sure your hair is tied back and out of your face. Ensure any make up or fake tan thats on your face and neck has been removed as best you can. For the full spa experience, grab your dressing gown and a head band, put your slippers on and go into full relaxation mode!

Step 2- Apply Cleansing Oil

Cleansing oil is a perfect way to really get all the dirt and left over makeup off your skin and out of your pores. Doing this step can be a wake up call as you realise how much dirt is still left on your skin, even after you think you’ve washed it! The oil works in a way that like attracts like, meaning that the oil will pick up other oil and dirt on the face. Make sure to rinse and wipe your face gently after this step. An affordable cleansing oil I recommend is the Simple Kind to Skin Hydrating Cleansing Oil. This can be purchased in Superdrug and is only £6.99. A little goes a long way with this product.

Step 3- Cleanse, again

This time, use your regular cleanser and some cotton pads and gently wipe your face to ensure all oil has gone and to also pick up the dirt that the previous product got ahold of. Do this down your neck too, it is common to blend your foundation down your neck but many people forget to look after this area like they do their face. The neck isn’t as spot prone as the face so it doesn’t need as much attention, but including it into most parts of your skin care routine won’t hurt. I recommend the Garnier Cleansing Micellar Water, it can be bought at any Superdrug, Savers or Boots and is around £5. This particular cleanser has different products for different skin types, for example they have a Micellar water for dry skin, one for sensitive skin and one for oily skin. Ensure you use the one matched to your skin type for the best results.

Step 4- Steam your face

I’m sure this step is not something many of you do every day, however this isn’t just regular skin care. This is a luxury Spa worthy facial! Grab a large bowl and boil the kettle. Pour the boiled water into the bowl and grab a towel. Place your face as close as you can over the bowl and put the towel over your head. Breathe long, slow and deep breaths and allow your pores to open right up. This is just like being in the steam room at a spa. Steaming your face opens pores and softens black heads making them easier to get rid off, yes please.

Step 5- Exfoliate

With a slightly damp face from the steam, apply your exfoliating face scrub and work it into the skin in small circular motions. This product will get right down into the pores now that you have steamed your face and you will get much better results. Use a scrub based on your preference, for example an exfoliating scrub made to eliminate black heads. Rinse this off using warm water and a wash cloth and gently dab your face.

Step 6- Face Mask and relax

Pick a face mask, again, depending on any particular issues you are having with your skin. For example, a brightening mask or a peel mask. If you are after a relaxing, rejuvenating facial than I suggest to go with a hydrating mask, this is a good choice for all skin types. Once the mask is applied, leave it on for the recommended amount of time, avoiding your eyebrows, eye area and lips. Pay extra attention to your T-zone. While your mask is working its magic, you can use this time to pluck your brows if they need some attention, sit back and relax to some Netflix or you could go the whole way and lay down with a cool cucumber slice on each eye to reduce any puffiness or swelling. If you prefer a tissue mask then I recommend the Garnier Moisture Bomb Sheet Mask.

Step 7- Toner

After following the individual instructions of the mask to remove it, dab your face until it is dry with a soft towel. Be gentle with your skin as it has been through a lot in the past half hour. Now apply your toner. This is a step many people miss out, however, it is important to use a toner because it helps to close the pores which reduces the risk of dirt getting in. This is especially important in this facial as you have opened them up through the steam. I recommend the L’Oréal Paris Fine Flowers Cleansing Toner. This costs £5.99.

Step 8- Rehydrate

Lastly, apply either your day time moisturiser or you night cream depending on the time of the day. It is important to put some moisture back into your skin after all of that! Keeping your face nice and hydrated is important even for those with oily skin, just use an oil free moisturiser.

Times may be hard but don’t let your skin suffer because of it! Stress is known to play a part in skin playing up or having breakouts, so give it the love that it needs, repeat these steps weekly and take some time to relax.
