#CarbonCares: The sea-safe, cruelty-free sun creams you’ll want for your post-lockdown holiday

Get your dose of SPF without costing the environment

From boycotting plastic straws to investing in reusable cotton pads, there are so many ways we can help protect the environment, and marine life in particular. One thing you might not have considered is what sun cream you use. So when you’re getting ready for your next holiday, consider what we’re about to tell you!

What’s the harm in chemical sun creams?

Oxybenzone and octinoxate are the two culprit ingredients- both of which can be harmful to algae in the ocean and can also damage coral and other marine life. Hawaii has even gone as far as to ban the sale of sunscreens that contain these two chemicals because of how harmful they can be to underwater eco-systems.

How important is it?

It has been found that 14,000 tons of sun cream end up in coral reefs every year, so the toxicity of our sun creams is clearly very important! This doesn’t mean you need to skip the SPF though (in fact you should always use sufficient sun protection, all year round), it just means it’s important to consider what sun cream you’re using if you’re going to be taking a dip in the sea.

So…what are the eco-friendly alternatives?

There are many marine-friendly sun creams out there so you can enjoy the sun and sea, guilt-free. Sea-safe alternatives are totally efficient in protecting your skin from UV rays and don’t pose any risk to sea life- what’s not to love? Here’s a list of some of the cruelty-free options we’ve found:
