Top tips to create a salon worthy mani at home

No visit to the salon required. Some top tips to achieve a salon worthy mani at home.

Making a trip to the salon at the moment is clearly off the cards for us this lock-down. Why not give yourself a mani at home? Now is the best time to learn and perfect a new skill as lets be real there’s not much else to do!

It can be hard to get the same results at home that you’re used to from the salon. This isn’t to say it is impossible to achieve an Instagram worthy manicure by yourself, all it takes is a little practice. It is true what they say, practice really does make perfect.

The UK’s leading online retailer for professional nails, @nailpolishdirect shares some top tips on how to create the perfect mani at home. It takes 10 simple steps. Follow along for a mani so good you’ll have people asking where you had them done.

Step 1: Clean your nails with polish remover.

To get a great mani at home, prep your nails. This means starting with a good nail polish remover. Even if you don’t have any polish on, this will help soften your cuticles. Rub a cotton ball of remover over each nail to get rid of any oils or dirt.

Step 2: Clip, file, and buff.

Clip nails down and gently file, moving in one direction to get your tips to your desired shape. Top tip, holding the file and tilting it so you file from slightly underneath your nails will strengthen them. Finally, buff the tops and sides of your nails lightly with a buffer, this will create a smooth surface for your polish. Think of buffing your nails as the same as brushing your teeth—it brightens them, gets rid of ridges and makes them look more youthful.

Step 3: Push back your cuticles.

Prep cuticles with a cuticle remover, to help dissolve dead skin and soften the area. The cuticle remover will act like an exfoliating treatment for your nail beds. Then gently push back your cuticles with a cuticle stick. Cuticles protect your nails from bacteria, avoid cutting them.

Step 4: Exfoliate your hands.

Exfoliate hands, wrists, and forearms with a scrub that eliminates dead skin cells. Grab your cuticle stick and clean any grime from under nails. Then wash your hands and dry them thoroughly.

Step 5: Moisturize your hands and cuticles.

Moisturize now to avoid smudging almost-dry nail polish later. Treat yourself by giving yourself a mini hand massage, just because you’re not at a salon doesn’t mean you can’t relax. To finish, wipe over each nail with nail polish remover to get rid of any residue the moisturizer may have left.

Step 6: Apply a base coat.

Apply a base coat to hydrate and protect nails and prevent chipping. It is recommended waiting two full whole minutes between each coat.

Step 7: Apply your first coat of colour.

Apply a coat of your chosen colour, being sure to get the brush all the way down to the cuticle and into the corners of your nail. Remember to keep the layer of polish thin as this will allow it to dry faster. Sometimes striping your nail three times: once down the middle, once on each side This helps get the spread of polish even.

Step 8: Apply your second coat of color.

After a full two minutes, apply the second coat of nail polish. Just remember to keep it nice and thin.

Step 9: Finish with a topcoat.

A topcoat protects your manicure from chipping and adds shine to nails, don’t skip this step. If you do you will shorten the lifespan of your mani. Top tip: Be careful when you put your topcoat on, a messy application can ruin your entire mani due to the way it tightens when it dries.

Step 10: Clean edges and leave to dry

Tidy up any mistakes by wrapping a piece of cotton ball soaked in nail polish remover around the end of your cuticle stick and carefully trace around your nails. Then allow five minutes drying time.

When you show off your nails on Instagram, shock everyone by revealing they’re DIY.
